Team 5 w/b 26.2.18

Date: 2nd Mar 2018 @ 3:02pm

This has been quite possibly the most fun-filled and Science-packed week for Team 5 ever!

For Monday morning assembly, a mad scientist - whose name was Turbo Tom - came into our school.  He conducted a variety of experiments.  One involved flames which shot almost as high as the roof of the hall!  Another involved using air pressure to squeeze an egg through a seemingly-impossibly small space.  He also changed the state of red cabbage from a solid to a liquid and then made a solution from the cabbage juice which he turned different colours by adding alkali and acid detectors.  In the afternoon, we used Newton meters to find out which of our shoes and different surfaces could produce the most friction.

On Tuesday we wrote magazine adverts for the Jianzi we made for Chinese New Year.  On Wednesday we had 2 different Science workshops!  The first was with Alfie from the STEM centre.  He helped us to build on our friction work by testing what angle was required to make objects with different surfaces slide off a ramp.  That afternoon, we learned about the Vitruvian Man, and measured ourselves to discover whether it was true that our arm span length is the same as our height.  We were amazed to discover that it was!

Thursday was World Book Day!  We dressed up as a plethora of different characters and gave mini-presentations about our characters.  We had a great time!  We read a book called the Lost Words, which contains a series of spells in poem form about words that are no longer in dictionaries.  We focused on one called ‘Kingfisher’, and analysed the different poetic devices we could find.  We found kennings, alliteration, metaphor and lots of beautiful action and description.

On Friday we wrote a recount about our Science week.  We realised that we had done so much that a few of us ended up writing 3 pages!  We can’t wait for the next themed week in school, and are all very curious about which subject might be next!

Next week’s Mouse Mania is…decorate your own cookies!

Have a wonderful weekend!
